A War With U.S. Would Be Nuclear, General Says
A senior Chinese general said Beijing was likely to use nuclear weapons against the United States if Washington attacked his country in the event Taiwan should formally declare independence, the Financial Times newspaper reported.
Zhu Chenghu, a major general who said he was expressing his personal views and did not anticipate a conflict with Washington, told foreign journalists: “If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition ... I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons.”
A spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry noted that the general had said he was not speaking for the government.
