Update -- Chivas USA officially announced Hans Westerhof, 56, as its new coach Friday. Westerhof, who is also director of football for both Chivas de Guadalajara and Saprissa of Costa Rica, said he would retain his titles for now and remain coach of Chivas USA through the regular season. He has a specific goal for the last-place club, which is six points out of fourth place -- finishing in the top four of the MLS Western Division and qualifying for the playoffs. Chivas President and co-owner Antonio Cue said he initially planned on making the announcement next week but paperwork and a work visa came through early for Westerhof, who is Dutch. Besides Guadalajara, which he led to the Mexican league’s 2003 Apertura tournament final, Westerhof has also coached several teams in the Dutch league, including Ajax Amsterdam. Thomas Rongen, who was removed as coach Monday, remains on staff as the club’s sporting director, as do assistants Javier “Zully” Ledesma, who served as interim coach in a 1-1 tie with Kansas City on Wednesday, and Martin Vasquez.
