Falling Rock Kills Woman on Fishing Trip
A woman on a weekend fishing trip was killed after a large chunk of rock broke loose from a boulder on a mountainside above a lake and knocked her into the water, authorities said.
Kimberley Barnes, 42, of Modesto was taken to Sonora Regional Medical Center where she died a short time later.
The rockslide above Pinecrest Lake in the Sierra foothills of Tuolumne County occurred about 11:20 a.m. Saturday, Sheriff’s Lt. George H. Ruckman said.
He said Barnes was struck by a “sheared-off piece of rock the size of a sports utility vehicle.”
Barnes was at the lake with her husband, 5-year-old son and friends, Ruckman said.
