Outbreak of Cholera Hits Capital, Killing 8

An outbreak of cholera in Kabul, the Afghan capital, has killed at least eight people and is feared to have infected more than 2,000 others.
“An epidemic is about to break out here,” warned Fred Hartman, an epidemiologist and technical director for a U.S.-backed health program. “As soon as water sources are contaminated, [cholera] spreads.”
Health officials in the city of 4 million said the threat had been contained. But isolation tents were pitched in hospital gardens as a precaution.
