Mystics Cool Fever in Two Overtimes

Charlotte Smith-Taylor missed two free throws for the Washington Mystics with 3.7 seconds left in regulation and the score tied. But in the second overtime, she made consecutive three-point baskets to lift the host Washington Mystics over the Indiana Fever, 88-78, Saturday night.

Smith-Taylor finished with 11 points, including eight in the second overtime.

Rookie Temeka Johnson made nine of 11 shots for 21 points, including a 15-foot jumper, to give the Mystics (4-6) an 81-73 lead with 1:17 remaining.

Despite playing their third game in four nights, the Fever (7-4) outrebounded the Mystics, 43-28, but shot only 38.4%.

Connecticut 73, Detroit 63 -- Nykesha Sales had 17 points and Taj McWilliams-Franklin had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the host Sun, which avenged its only loss.

The Sun (7-1) has won a franchise-best seven games in a row. The Shock (5-4) got within six points with 1:36 left, but Connecticut made seven of eight free throws to put the game away.

The Sun lost, 78-67, at Detroit in the season opener May 21.

New York 65, Phoenix 54 -- Vickie Johnson topped the 3,000-point mark by scoring 14 for the Liberty (4-4) at home.

Phoenix (3-7) cut the deficit to 42-40 on Diana Taurasi’s three-pointer with 12:04 left before a three-pointer by Elena Baranova and a jumper by Becky Hammon pushed New York’s lead back to seven points.

Houston 75, San Antonio 69 -- Sheryl Swoopes scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the second half, rallying the Comets (5-5) at San Antonio.
