South, West to get grayer
A rapidly graying U.S. population will continue migrating to the South and West, according to new projections from the U.S. Census Bureau, with Florida, California and Texas making up nearly half of the total U.S. population growth between 2000 and 2030. The states are expected to each gain more than 12 million people during the period.
Florida, now the fourth most populous state, should edge past New York into third place by 2011, while California and Texas should continue to rank first and second, respectively, in 2030.
Expected to round out the top gainers will be Arizona, with 5.6 million more people, and North Carolina, with 4.2 million.
Some 29 states may have populations of which 20% are 65 and older by 2030.
