New Investigator Named for Juarez Killings
Mexico has replaced a special prosecutor assigned to investigate 12 years of largely unsolved killings of women in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Atty. Gen. Daniel Cabeza de Vaca said.
Cabeza de Vaca gave no reason for replacing Maria Lopez Urbina with Mireille Roccatti, a law professor who as president of Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission from 1997 to 1999 examined the Ciudad Juarez killings.
Hours before Cabeza de Vaca’s announcement, President Vicente Fox angered victims’ family members and human rights groups by suggesting that many of the killings had been solved.
