USC Wins Again in Honolulu, 68-53

Eshaya Murphy scored 17 points to lead No. 24 USC to a 68-53 victory over Eastern Illinois on Sunday night in the second round of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic at Honolulu.

Chloe Kerr scored 15 points, Jamie Hagiya had 12 and Cailee LeNoir 10 for the Trojans (2-0).

Ellen Canale led the Panthers (0-1) with 19 points, and Megan Sparks and Tangie Sellers each had 11.

In Saturday night’s first-round game, Eshaya Murphy had 15 points to lead four players in double figures as the Trojans beat Hawaii, 80-71.

Chloe Kerr and Camille LeNoir scored 13 points apiece, and Allison Jaskowiak added 12 for USC. Kerr also had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Amy Sanders led the Rainbow Wahine with a game-high 20 points. Janevia Taylor added 15 and Tanya Smith 12.

No. 1 Duke 93, Old Dominion 56 -- The Blue Devils (2-0) scored 20 consecutive points in a span of about six minutes to take a 26-4 lead with 11:07 remaining in the first half at Norfolk, Va.

Old Dominion (0-1), playing without injured starters Tiffany Green and Tamara Ransburg, had 10 turnovers in the first 9:30 and seven more by halftime to trail, 47-26.

No. 2 Tennessee 83, Stetson 33 -- The Hatters led, 6-1, in the opening minutes at Knoxville, Tenn., before the Lady Vols took over. They outscored Stetson, 48-6, the rest of the first half.

Tennessee started the second half with an 8-0 run to go ahead 57-12. Stetson finally broke the scoring drought when Sharnesha Smith made a three-point basket with 15:36 left.

No. 9 Connecticut 82, No. 25 Oklahoma 62 -- Charde Houston scored 22 points and Mel Thomas had 20 at Storrs, Conn., to lead the Huskies (4-0) past the Sooners (3-1) for their third Preseason NIT title.

No. 10 Michigan State 86, Western Carolina 61 -- Liz Shimek had a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans (2-0) past the Catamounts (0-2) at East Lansing, Mich. She was 13 for 16 from the field and added four assists and three steals in 26 minutes.

No. 16 Minnesota 84, No. 11 Stanford 77 -- The Gophers (2-0) upset the Cardinal (1-1) at Minneapolis to win the Subway Classic for the sixth consecutive year. A layup by Natasha Williams and two free throws by Shannon Schonrock gave Minnesota a 80-72 lead with 35.2 seconds left.

Candice Wiggins led the Cardinal with 21 points, while Brooke Smith had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 14 Maryland 93, Xavier 68 -- After missing five of their first seven shots at College Park, Md., the Terrapins went on a 19-0 run. The Musketeers went more than six minutes without a basket.

No. 15 Notre Dame 71, Western Michigan 68 -- Megan Duffy made four free throws in the final minute at Kalamazoo, Mich., to lift the Irish. Casey Rost, sidelined for a year because of a knee injury, scored a career-high 29 points for the Broncos.

Duffy, who scored 19 points, made all eight of her free throws and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Notre Dame to its fourth consecutive 2-0 start.

No. 20 Arizona State 67, San Diego 63 -- The Sun Devils (3-0) started the second half at San Diego with an 18-4 run to take a 50-37 lead, their biggest of the game.

Kelly Winther’s basket brought the Toreros (0-2) within five at 66-61 with just over a minute left, but they missed several chances to pull closer in the final minute.

St. Joseph’s 54, No. 23 North Carolina State 52 -- Whitney French made two free throws with two seconds left at Philadelphia to give the Hawks (2-0) a one-point lead.

After North Carolina State sent a long pass out of bounds, the Wolfpack were forced to foul. Ayahna Cornish made one of two free throws with 1.3 seconds left for the final margin.
