Gonzaga Wins in Triple OT

Adam Morrison set a tournament record with 43 points and No. 8 Gonzaga beat No. 12 Michigan State, 109-106, in triple overtime Tuesday night in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

There were 13 lead changes in the last 7 minutes 30 seconds of regulation, four in the final 1:14. Maurice Ager of Michigan State tied the score, 80-80, at the buzzer of regulation with his fifth three-point basket over the final 7:10.

The first overtime ended with Gonzaga having a chance to win, but the Bulldogs missed three shots in the final nine seconds.

The second overtime ended with the officials putting 0.9 seconds on the clock after a Michigan State turnover just before the buzzer, but Gonzaga couldn’t take advantage.

Then, finally, Morrison made two free throws with 19 seconds left in the third overtime to give Gonzaga (3-0) the lead for good at 107-106. Michigan State freshman Goran Suton missed a layup with 4.6 seconds left. Derek Raivio made two free throws without time going off the clock for a three-point lead.

Shannon Brown of Michigan State (1-2) tried to get off a three-point shot to tie the score, but lost the ball on the way up. He was closely guarded by Jeremy Pargo and Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo jumped and yelled for a foul but none was called and the game ended.

“It was one of the greatest games I’ve ever been involved in,” Gonzaga Coach Mark Few said.

No. 2 Texas 68, No. 18 Iowa 59 -- LaMarcus Aldridge had 18 points and 10 rebounds and helped Texas (4-0) erase a seven-point halftime deficit in the championship game of the Guardians Classic at Kansas City, Mo.

Adam Haluska had 15 points at halftime for Iowa (3-1) and finished with 23.

No. 3 Connecticut 79, No. 9 Arizona 70 -- Denham Brown scored 17 points and Connecticut (3-0) held Arizona without a field goal for a five-minute stretch of the second half in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational.

Guard Craig Austrie had 15 points for Connecticut, and center Hilton Armstrong had a career-high 14 points.

Ivan Radenovic had 20 points for Arizona (1-1).

No. 7 Kentucky 80, West Virginia 66 -- Patrick Sparks scored 25 points and led an early 20-0 run that carried Kentucky in the consolation game of the Guardians Classic.

Kentucky (3-1) turned a 9-2 deficit into a 22-9 lead in the first half with Sparks making three three-pointers, and West Virginia (2-2) spent the rest of the game trying to catch up.

No. 10 Boston College 92, Buffalo 63 -- Jared Dudley scored 20 points to help the Eagles (3-0) survive an off-night by preseason All-American Craig Smith and beat Buffalo (2-1) at Boston.

Smith had 12 points and four rebounds, missing seven minutes in the first half due to foul trouble and six minutes in the second when he got a cut over his left eye.

No. 15 Illinois 93, Texas Southern 59 -- Dee Brown scored 14 points to lead Illinois at Champaign, Ill. The Illini (3-0) led by as many as 41 points. Texas Southern is 1-2.

Bucknell 74, No. 17 Syracuse 69 -- Kevin Bettencourt scored 20 points and keyed a late 13-2 run as Bucknell upset the Orange at Syracuse, N.Y. It was the first win for the Bison (2-0) in nine meetings with Syracuse (3-2).

No. 23 Maryland 98, Chaminade 69 -- A 23-0 run in the second half led Maryland (2-1) to the win in the consolation round of the Maui Invitational. Chaminade, a Division II school, is 0-2.

No. 25 Washington 90, Idaho 67 -- Jamal Williams scored 16 points to help Washington (5-0) extend its home-court winning streak to 27 with a rout of Idaho (0-2).

Monique Currie had 21 points and 15 rebounds, helping top-ranked Duke (3-0) beat Fairfield (0-2), 110-44, at Durham, N.C. ... Erica White scored 14 points and No. 3 Louisiana State (2-0) won its home opener over Southern (2-1), 107-39....Sophia Young had 20 points to help No. 5 Baylor (4-0) beat Texas A&M; Corpus Christi (0-2), 92-64, at Waco, Texas....Caroline Williams scored 19 points and No. 20 Vanderbilt (3-1) raced to an 18-0 lead in its 80-29 win over Alabama A&M; (0-1) at Nashville....Khadija Bowens scored 21 points to help No. 21 Temple (4-0) to a 72-53 win over Penn (1-1) at Philadelphia.
