Corona del Mar Wins at Mt. SAC

Competing without its No. 2 runner, who was out of town, the Corona del Mar girls’ cross-country team easily won the Division III sweepstakes race Friday at the Mt. San Antonio Relays.

The Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in the nation by Harrier Magazine and tops in the Southern Section Division III coaches’ poll, finished with 38 points and a team time of 92 minutes 42 seconds. It is the eighth-fastest girls’ time since the 2.9-mile course was upgraded in 1999.

Corona del Mar senior Annie St. Geme was the only girl to break the 18-minute barrier for the day, winning in 17:08.

Michael Coe of Lompoc Cabrillo was impressive in winning the boys’ Division III sweepstakes race in 14:50 and leading his team to victory with 91 points and a team time of 79:03. Page (Ariz.) was runner-up with 97 points, and Barstow was third with 108. Coe was the only runner to break 15 minutes and the Conquistadores were the only team to better 80 minutes.

McFarland won the boys’ Division IV sweepstakes with 27 points, and Riverside Woodcrest Christian took the boys’ Division V sweepstakes with 35 points. Junior Erick Garcia of Parlier was the Division IV individual winner in 15:25, and junior Brent Handa of Fall River won Division V in 15:31.

Felton San Lorenzo Valley edged Half Moon Bay, 50-56, to win the girls’ Division IV sweepstakes race, and La Canada Flintridge Prep was the Division V winner with 42 points. Sophomore Taylor Johnson of San Lorenzo Valley was the Division IV winner in 18:18, and junior Jillian Klassen of Phoenix Scottsdale Christian ran 18:45 to finish first in Division V.

The Division I and II races will be run today at Mt. San Antonio College beginning at 7 a.m. Sweepstakes races will be run between 9:15 and 10:30 a.m.

Girls’ Volleyball

Alix Klineman had 21 kills and Jessica Hardy added 16 in two matches as top-seeded Manhattan Beach Mira Costa reached the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara High.

Mira Costa will face fourth-seeded Torrey Pines, and second-seeded La Costa Canyon will play unseeded Dos Pueblos (18-1) today in the semifinals at 10:45 a.m.

Klineman had seven kills and Hardy added six in a 25-21, 25-8, 25-16 victory over Bakersfield Centennial in the first round. Klineman followed with 14 kills and 12 digs and Hardy added 10 kills and seven digs as the Mustangs (20-2) rallied for an 18-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Bakersfield in the quarterfinals.
