Prado Gets a Win, Finally

Edgar Prado had ridden in 41 Breeders’ Cup races before he won the Juvenile Fillies with Folklore at Belmont Park.

“I just try to find the right horses to ride in the Breeders’ Cup,” said Prado, who has won more than 5,000 races in his career. “I got the job done this year. I hope there will be many more.”

Before Saturday, Prado’s Breeders’ Cup mounts had earned $2.6 million, which ranked him 23rd on the money list. His frustrations included four second-place finishes.

Other jockeys winning their first Breeders’ Cup races were Garrett Gomez, who won with Stevie Wonderboy in the Juvenile and Artie Schiller in the Mile; Rafael Bejarano with Intercontinental in the Filly and Mare Turf; and Christophe Soumillon, who rides in France, with Shirocco in the Turf.

The four horses seeking second Breeders’ Cup wins were all beaten. Ouija Board was second in the Filly and Mare Turf, Singletary eighth in the Mile, Ashado third in the Distaff and Better Talk Now seventh in the Turf.

Six horses have won two Breeders’ Cup races, the most recent High Chaparral in 2002-03. High Chaparral dead-heated with Johar for his win in 2003.

Funfair, a 6-year-old gelding, broke down in the Mile, suffered a fractured right hind leg and was euthanized.... In stakes before the Breeders’ Cup races, Gotaghostofachance won the $281,500 Sport Page Handicap over Captain Squire, and Magna Graduate beat Scrappy T in the $287,250 Discovery Handicap.
