Perry Suffers a Concussion

Mighty Duck rookie forward Corey Perry was put on injured reserve Saturday after suffering a concussion early in the second period of Friday night’s 6-4 win over the St. Louis Blues.

Perry took a hard check along the boards from forward Dallas Drake, who was suspended for two games by the NHL on Saturday.

Drake was suspended for Saturday night’s game against the Kings and for the Blues’ home contest on Wednesday versus Chicago.

The left winger will lose $12,408.16 in salary.

“It was an intentional shot to the head,” Duck General Manager Brian Burke said. “No question about it. I didn’t like it when I saw it, and on replay, I liked it even less.”

Perry did not return and wasn’t with the team for practice Saturday at a rink in Riverside. Burke said the severity of the concussion is not known, although the winger did suffer one in last year’s Memorial Cup finals while playing for London in junior hockey.

Duck Coach Randy Carlyle, already saddled with a fine for his comments after a loss to Detroit, would not comment on Drake’s hit.

Perry joins a long line of injured Ducks. On Saturday, they also put center Sergei Fedorov and defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh on injured reserve. Fedorov will miss his ninth consecutive game with a groin injury and Ozolinsh will miss his second with a broken rib.

Rookie forward Ryan Getzlaf is also on injured reserve with a strained shoulder. The Ducks, though, have won three of their last four and two in a row, getting contributions from many players.

“We’re a resilient group,” Carlyle said. “The games that we’ve lost, we battled. I have not seen this group fold their tent yet.”

Update -- The Ducks called up center Zenon Konopka from their minor league affiliate in Portland, Maine, to fill Perry’s spot. Konopka had two goals and six assists in Portland. Left wing Travis Moen, who didn’t practice, is expected to miss his second consecutive game with a strained knee. In the teams’ first meeting last Sunday, Phoenix goalie Curtis Joseph was pulled after giving up three goals in a 5-3 loss at the Pond. Joseph became the ninth goalie in NHL history to reach 400 victories Thursday in a 3-2 win over Calgary.
