Valencia Plays Without Top Twins
The one-day Valencia girls’ tennis tournament will take place today without the host team’s top players.
Twins Cassie and Alexa Strange are on a recruiting trip to West Point this weekend, Viking Coach Annie Kellogg said.
Quartz Hill’s Ashley Litchfield is the defending singles champion. Others schools in the eight-team event include Granada Hills, Irvine Northwood, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Lancaster, Newhall Hart and Canyon Country Canyon.
Valencia is also competing today in the CIF-Wilson SCTA First Serve tournament. Teams from throughout Southern California will finish play today at two sites in an event that is intended for non-elite players not among the top 150 in Southern California rankings.
Diamond Bar will play at 1:15 p.m. at Orange Coast College in one final against the winner of Fullerton Rosary and Upland. Another final, set for 4 p.m. at West Torrance High, will include the winners of semifinals between Valencia-Ojai Villanova Prep and L.A. Marymount-Alhambra.

Football
The game scheduled for Friday night between San Gabriel Gabrielino and host Duarte was canceled after a report of a shooting after the freshman game Thursday, Duarte Principal Bill Martinez said.
The cancellation will not affect either team’s record.
“The altercation was between two adult groups and not between students of either school,” Martinez said of the reported shooting near the Duarte campus. “We gave Gabrielino several options to play the football game, but we could not come to an agreement.
“We regret any inconvenience that this may have caused parents and fans of either school.”
