Santa Clara Holds Off Pepperdine, 62-56
Brody Angley scored five points and grabbed two key rebounds over the last 27 seconds, helping Santa Clara hold off Pepperdine, 62-56, on Monday in a West Coast Conference game at Santa Clara.
Travis Niesen had 18 points and four rebounds for the Broncos, who improved to 12-15 overall and 5-9 in the conference. Santa Clara won its third straight after losing 10 of 11. The three-game winning streak matches its longest of the season.
Taashan Forehan-Kelly had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Pepperdine, including a 10-foot jump shot with 32.8 seconds left that pulled the Waves (7-19, 3-11) to within 57-56. The Broncos, who led by as many as 11 in the second half then had to hold on behind Angley.
St. Mary’s 82, Loyola Marymount 70 -- Brett Collins scored six of his 17 points during a key second-half run at home that helped the Gaels clinch a first-round bye in the WCC tournament.
Daniel Kickert had five of his 16 points during the 21-9 spurt that came after the Lions (11-17, 8-6) tied the score at 45-45. The Gaels (16-11, 8-6) won six straight and eight of nine -- the only loss coming in the final second at conference champion Gonzaga -- to end the regular season in a tie for second place with the Lions.
