Frolov Will Take a Fluke

Alexander Frolov is unlikely to seek the video clip of his goal in the Kings’ 3-2 victory over Dallas Saturday. Pretty it was not.

Frolov had just been clobbered face-first to the ice near the net and was getting to his skates when a Pavol Demitra pass went off his knee. The red light went on and Frolov got hugs.

So ended the longest drought in his life, 16 games without a goal.

“I was just trying to get on my feet,” Frolov said. “You don’t give those back.”

Frolov’s last goal was against Chicago on Nov. 26. His slump had caused more than a little concern by the Kings’ coaches, who have prodded, pushed and cajoled him to shoot more.

“We harp on him to play consistently hard,” Coach Andy Murray said. “We need that from him every night. Mike Modano is Dallas’ best player almost every night. That’s what we expect from Fro.”

Defenseman Mike Weaver was scratched Saturday because of a hip injury, which put Denis Grebeshkov in the lineup.

Grebeshkov, who was called up from minor league Manchester on Monday, responded with an assist, the second of his career.

“I played good, I didn’t make many mistakes,” Grebeshkov said. “And I got a point, that’s a good night, right?”

Weaver is the sixth player the Kings have lost in the last three weeks.

“That means six opportunities for six other players,” Murray said.

Center Matt Ryan, called up Saturday, was one of them. He was the fifth King to make his NHL debut this season.
