Police Bombing Sets a Recall in Motion
A bomb detonated when former LAPD detective turned private eye Harry Raymond tried to start his car. Raymond, however, lived to blow the whistle on corrupt cops, causing something of an explosion himself. The bombing by Mayor Frank Shaw’s police allies so outraged the public that they voted Shaw out of office in one
of the first recalls of a big-city mayor in U.S. history. Earle E. Kynette, the head of the LAPD’s intelligence squad, was sentenced to two years to life in San Quentin for the bombing.
In the ensuing months, Police Chief James Edgar Davis and 23 other high-ranking officers were forced to resign.
