Criticism of ‘push’ trains is on the wrong track
Re “Panel Seeks Ban on ‘Push’ Trains,” Jan. 19
Critics of Metrolink push-pull commuter rail operations seem oblivious to the long history of safe operation of similar equipment across the U.S. and Canada. The use of cab control cars in California is widespread. Most Amtrak trains on the Surfliner, Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin routes use similar technology.
The accident a year ago in Glendale was tragic, but the real irony is that so few people died in this worst-case crash scenario. A Hollywood studio would be hard-pressed to invent a more horrific wreck. The cars held up surprisingly well. Compare this accident with a recent commuter train derailment in Japan, where 107 passengers and crew died.
The real issue for California should be better design of grade crossings and their elimination in most cases. Those concerned with safety should be looking at the governor’s plans for massive spending on transportation infrastructure and demand that grade crossing issues be fully addressed.
