Ex-President Cleared of Genocide Charges
A judge cleared former Mexican President Luis Echeverria of genocide charges for his role in a 1968 massacre because the statute of limitations had expired.
Echeverria, who was president from 1970 to 1976, was charged with genocide a week ago and placed under house arrest. He was interior minister when security forces stormed a student rally in Mexico City on Oct. 2, 1968, days before the Summer Olympics began.
Defense lawyer Juan Velasquez said he expected a special prosecutor to appeal, but predicted the ruling would end efforts to try Echeverria, 84.
