Wie One Behind Webb in France

Michelle Wie’s biggest problem at the Evian Masters may be her own strength.

The 16-year-old from Hawaii is poised to make a run at her first victory as a professional, sitting one shot behind leader Karrie Webb after shooting a two-under-par 70 in the third round at Evian, France.

But if Wie is to win, she’ll have to improve her performance on the par-three 17th hole, where she has struggled to control her tee shots all week.

“It’s like I became the Hulk on that hole or something,” Wie said.

She bogeyed the hole Friday for the second time in the tournament, hitting her tee shot 30 yards long.

Wie is at 11-under 205 for the tournament. Webb (69) dropped three shots on the 12th and 13th holes but compensated with six birdies to finish the day at 204.

Laura Davies and Se Ri Pak are tied for third at 10 under.

Corey Pavin maintained a one-shot lead over Jason Bohn in the hot and humid U.S. Bank Championship, but he still had work to do in the second round today at Milwaukee.

Pavin was 12 under with seven holes left when play was suspended because of darkness.

“I’m ready for dinner, that’s for sure,” the 46-year-old Pavin said. “The hardest thing is just wasting time until you tee off.”

Bohn was 11 under after playing 35 holes Friday. He shot a 65 in the first round and added a 64 in the second on the Brown Deer Park course.

Jeff Sluman (65), D.J. Trahan (65), Jerry Kelly (67), Nathan Green (64) and Arjun Atwal were nine under. Atwal had seven holes left in the second round.

Exactly half the players, 78, were unable to complete the round.

Defending champion Ben Crane was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. He parred the par-five sixth hole, but signed for a 3.

Eduardo Romero eagled and birdied his final two holes for a seven-under 63 and shared the lead with Loren Roberts at the halfway point of the Senior British Open at Turnberry, Scotland.

After a 379-yard drive at the par-five 17th, Romero’s blind pitch took him to within four feet of the flag for an eagle. His approach to the 18th green wound up two feet from the pin and he made that to move level with Roberts at 10-under 130.

Roberts carded his second 65 in a row on another day of low scoring on the Turnberry links.
