Williams Sisters Out of La Costa

The unpredictable comings and goings of Venus and Serena Williams took another turn Friday when the sisters withdrew from the upcoming Acura Classic, which starts on Monday at La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad.

Venus Williams, idle on the tour since losing in the third round at Wimbledon, cited pain in her left wrist, and Serena Williams said in a statement that her doctor “advised” her not to compete. Serena Williams reached the semifinals in Cincinnati last week, her first tournament since the Australian Open in January.

As previously reported, Lindsay Davenport will not be playing in the Acura Classic either.

Davenport and the Williamses, however, are scheduled to appear in the JPMorgan Chase Open in Carson, Aug. 7-13.
