It’s by design

THANK YOU for covering the awards of the Costume Designers Guild [“A Dress-Up Affair for the Dress-Up Crowd,” by Richard Rushfield, Feb. 27]. I loved that you described it from the red carpet to what people wore and included details about the presentation. But there was one problem: the repeated use of the title “costumer.” There are no costumers in our guild.

The Costumers, Local 705, is a very important local to us. They are the staff and crew that work with the costume design department to create the costumes. These wonderful people make the costumes, dye the costumes, distress and age the costumes, get them laundered, organize them and on and on.

They do absolutely everything except ... design the costumes. Only members of the Costume Designers Guild are allowed this credit, and this was our awards event.
