Frankel’s 14 Test Record
Bobby Frankel is one of eight trainers who have won four races in a single day at Santa Anita. In fact, he has accomplished the feat twice, as has fellow Hall of Famer Richard Mandella. Clyde Van Dusen, Farrell Jones, Buster Millerick, Charlie Whittingham, Mike Mitchell and Doug O’Neill are the others to have won four.
Frankel has the ammunition to break the record today. He has entered what is believed to be a Santa Anita-record 14 horses during the 11-race program, including strong contenders in the four graded stakes races.
Besides High Limit, the morning line favorite in the $1-million Santa Anita Handicap, Frankel will have likely choice Cacique in the $300,000 Kilroe Mile, Latent Heat, the 5-2 second choice in the $200,000 Santa Catalina Stakes, and Set Alight and To Sender in the $100,000 Baldwin Stakes.
A big day will also move Frankel closer to Whittingham for the top spot in victories at Santa Anita.
The trainer has 842 wins in Arcadia, 27 behind Whittingham. He is also second in stakes victories with 118, compared with Whittingham’s 204. The totals do not include Oak Tree meetings.
The Kilroe Mile and the Santa Anita Handicap are part of a pick six with a guaranteed pool of $1 million.
Race of the day: Suave, who ran poorly as the 2-1 favorite in the Donn Handicap on Feb. 4, will try to bounce back for owners Mace and Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Stable and trainer Paul McGee in the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap today.
A Grade II at 1 3/16 miles, the Gulfstream Park Handicap drew seven other horses, including Funny Cide, Harlington and Sun King.
One for the road: Liquor Cabinet is an improving 5-year-old and looks capable of winning his third in a row in the $65,000 Stymie Handicap at Aqueduct. Eibar Coa will ride the son of Hennessy for owner-breeder Edward Evans and trainer Mark Hennig in the 1 1/8 -mile race that is the eighth on the card.
Exotically speaking: A late pick three using Hasty Kris, Bonus Pack and First Word in the eighth, Carini, Santiaga and Grand Miss in the ninth, and Magnum and High Limit in the 10th.
Winners: (previous day/meet total): 6/149. Money: (previous day/meet total): $31.40/$907.80. Total money bet: $840.
