An Orange County judge will decide March 30 whether disputed wording can stay in the ballot statement of a candidate for sheriff.

Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Hunt’s candidacy statement includes a sentence saying Sheriff Michael S. Carona has suffered “scandal after scandal.”

Carona’s campaign is paying for the challenge to Hunt’s statement.

Superior Court Judge Dennis S. Choate declined Monday to order the language altered and referred the issue to Judge Stephen Perk.

“This is a significant enough issue -- political speech -- for a full hearing,” he said.
