Sheriff’s investigators were searching Friday for four masked gunmen who shot and killed a security guard during an attempted robbery at a La Puente market, authorities said.

Frutso Anuino, 59, who had been on the job one week, was killed Thursday night when he confronted the robbers hiding in a second-floor office of the Northgate Market, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Paul Patterson.

Detectives believe the men were hiding in the upstairs office waiting to rob the store in the 800 block of Hacienda Boulevard after closing time.

A female employee encountered the gunmen at the foot of the stairs when she went to check on Anuino, Patterson said. One robber grabbed her, but she escaped, he said.

After the woman alerted the store’s nine other workers, they locked themselves in a first-floor office and called 911 about 10:45 p.m., Patterson said. Arriving deputies discovered Anuino’s body.

Authorities believe that the robbers ran out a back door without taking any money or merchandise. The investigation is continuing.
