1. JAZIL (30-1)

Owner: Shadwell Stable. Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin. Jockey: Fernando Jara. Silks: Light blue with white straps.

Sire: Seeking The Gold. Dam: Better Honour. Record: 6-1-3-0. (Races-wins-seconds-thirds). Earnings: $192,217.

Comments: His fast finish in the Wood Memorial was an optical illusion. The final eighth of a mile in the race was run in a slow 14 seconds.... McLaughlin, a former assistant to Wayne Lukas, finished second with longshot Closing Argument in last year’s Derby.... Jazil hasn’t won since beating maidens at Aqueduct on Dec. 7 in his final start as a 2-year-old.

2. STEPPENWOLFER (30-1)

Owners: Robert and Lawana Low. Trainer: Dan Peitz. Jockey: Robby Albarado. Silks: Blue with green accents.

Sire: Aptitude. Dam: Wolfer. Record: 8-3-2-2. Earnings: $361,520.

Comments: Failed in three tries against Lawyer Ron earlier in the year in Arkansas, but has late-running style for a race that could completely fall apart late.... His sire finished second at 11-1 behind Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000 Derby.... Has won at three tracks -- Aqueduct, Louisiana Downs and Oaklawn Park.... Will be the first Derby for both the Lows and Peitz.... Albarado, whose best finish was a fifth aboard Request For Parole in 2002, has his eighth Derby mount.

*

3. KEYED ENTRY (30-1)

Owner: Starlight Stables. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. Jockey: Patrick Valenzuela. Silks: Light blue with gold accents.

Sire: Honour And Glory. Dam: Ava Knowsthecode. Record: 5-3-1-1. Earnings: $247,000.

Comments: With Valenzuela riding, this colt will be part of the pace.... It was believed he had been taken out of consideration for the Derby after finishing third as the favorite in the Wood, but his connections decided to push on.... Unbeaten in three races around one turn, he has distance limitations and is a likely pace casualty.... Valenzuela has not finished better than eighth with four Derby mounts since his win with Sunday Silence in 1989.

*

4. SINISTER MINISTER (12-1)

Owners: Lanni Family Trust, et al. Trainer: Bob Baffert. Jockey: Victor Espinoza. Silks: Blue with a basketball.

Sire: Old Trieste. Dam: Sweet Minister. Record: 5-2-1-0. Earnings: $503,880.

Comments: Purchased privately after beating $62,500 maidens by eight lengths Jan. 20 at Santa Anita.... Went right to the front in Blue Grass and improved his position from there, but seems a risky proposition trying to stretch his speed an additional eighth of a mile over a track that isn’t as speed favoring as Keeneland.... Espinoza takes over the mount after Garrett Gomez chose Bob And John.... Sire, Old Trieste, set the pace in the 1998 Derby before fading to 10th.

5. POINT DETERMINED (12-1)

Owner: Robert and Beverly Lewis Trust. Trainer: Bob Baffert. Jockey: Rafael Bejarano. Silks: Yellow with lime green.

Sire: Point Given. Dam: Merengue. Record: 6-2-3-1. Earnings: $260,330.

Comments: Sire bombed in the 2001 Derby, but redeemed himself with dominant victories in the Preakness and Belmont....The colt’s following has grown in recent weeks because his grinding style should play well in the race at 1 1/4 miles.... He will also get sentimental support because of the respect for Bob Lewis, who died in February and had earlier Derby victories with Silver Charm and Charismatic.

6. SHOWING UP (20-1)

Owner: Lael Stables. Trainer: Barclay Tagg. Jockey: Cornelio Velasquez. Silks: Blue with green sleeves.

Sire: Strategic Mission. Dam: Miss Alethia. Record: 3-3-0-0. Earnings: $240,500.

Comments: With Barbaro, gives Roy and Gretchen Jackson, who race as Lael Stables, two shots at the Derby.... Has made no mistakes in three starts and made a successful stakes and two-turn debut in the Lexington, winning by 1 1/4 lengths as the 3-2 choice.... Purchased for $60,000 as a 2-year-old.... His sire stands for a $3,500 stud fee in Kentucky.... Tagg won the 2003 Derby and Preakness with Funny Cide.

*

7. BOB AND JOHN (12-1)

Owner: Stonerside Stable. Trainer: Bob Baffert. Jockey: Garrett Gomez. Silks: White with green “V.”

Sire: Seeking The Gold. Dam: Minister’s Melody. Record: 9-4-1-3. Earnings: $680,070.

Comments: His father, Seeking The Gold, finished seventh behind Winning Colors in the 1988 Derby.... Left California to get his most important stakes victory, winning the Wood Memorial last month at Aqueduct.... Gomez, who last had a Derby mount in 1995, chose this colt over Blue Grass upsetter Sinister Minister.... Colt is named for owner Bob McNair and racing manager John Adger.

8. BARBARO (4-1)

Owner: Lael Stables. Trainer: Michael Matz. Jockey: Edgar Prado. Silks: Blue with green sleeves.

Sire: Dynaformer. Dam: La Ville Rouge. Record: 5-5-0-0. Earnings: $849,000.

Comments: Considered better on the turf, he has done nothing wrong on the main track, winning the Holy Bull and Florida Derby this year at Gulfstream Park.... Prado is one of the country’s best riders but he’s had no luck in six Derby tries, his best finish a third with Peace Rules in 2003.... This is the first Derby for Matz, an accomplished equestrian and Olympic medalist.

*

9. SHARP HUMOR (20-1)

Owner: Purdedel Stable. Trainer: Dale Romans. Jockey: Mark Guidry. Silks: White with red stars.

Sire: Distorted Humor. Dam: Bellona. Record: 7-4-1-1. Earnings: $456,410.

Comments: Gave Barbaro a tussle in the Florida Derby before losing by half a length April 1.... Romans says his horse won’t be taking back early, although it is doubtful he’ll be able to outrun Sinister Minister in the opening quarter of a mile.... He is a New York-bred by the same sire who produced Funny Cide, the hero of the 2003 Derby and Preakness.... Guidry won the 2006 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.

*

10. A.P. WARRIOR (15-1)

Owner: Stan Fulton. Trainer: John Shirreffs. Jockey: Corey Nakatani. Silks: Green with blue circle

Sire: A.P. Indy. Dam: Warrior Queen. Record: 8-3-1-1. Earnings: $377,185.

Comments: Shirreffs, after his 50-1 upset with Giacomo in 2005, is trying to become the seventh trainer to win the Derby in consecutive years, joining H.J. Thompson, Ben Jones, Jimmy Jones, Lucien Laurin, Wayne Lukas and Bob Baffert.... A.P. Indy was forced to miss the 1992 Kentucky Derby with an injury, but returned to win the Belmont Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic and was chosen horse of the year.

11. SWEETNORTHERNSAINT (10-1)

Owners: J. Balsamo and T. Theos. Trainer: Michael Trombetta. Jockey: Kent Desormeaux. Silks: Red, yellow sleeves.

Sire: Sweetsouthernsaint. Dam: Ice Beauty. Record: 6-3-0-1. Earnings: $377,000.

Comments: Could have been claimed for $40,000 out of a maiden race in December at Laurel. He “won” by 16 lengths that day, but was disqualified for bearing in at the start and was placed fourth.... Has won three of four starts since, including a 9 1/4 -length victory in the Illinois Derby on April 8.... This is the first Derby starter for Trombetta, who is winning at about a 30% clip in 2006.

*

12. PRIVATE VOW (50-1)

Owner: Mike McCarty. Trainer: Steve Asmussen. Jockey: Shaun Bridgmohan. Silks: Blue and gold diamonds.

Sire: Broken Vow. Dam: Smooth As Silk. Record: 8-4-1-1. Earnings: $482,508.

Comments: Like stablemate Storm Treasure, has shown an affinity for Churchill Downs. A grandson of 1990 Derby winner Unbridled, he finished second in his debut over the surface on July 3, then won the Kentucky Jockey Club as the 7-10 favorite in his final 2-year-old appearance Nov. 26.... A bust in two starts as a 3-year-old, finishing seventh in the Rebel, then a no-excuse third in the Arkansas Derby.

*

13. BLUEGRASS CAT (30-1)

Owner: WinStar Farm LLC. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. Jockey: Ramon Dominguez. Silks: White with stylized star.

Sire: Storm Cat. Dam: She’s A Winner. Record: 7-4-1-0. Earnings: $361,280.

Comments: A winner of four of five starts as a 2-year-old, he has been a disappointment in 2006. After taking the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs in his first start of the year, he failed as the favorite in both the Tampa Bay Derby and the Blue Grass.... The Derby will be the first time he has been ridden by Dominguez, who finished last with High Limit in the 2005 Derby.

14. DEPUTY GLITTERS (50-1)

Owner: Joseph Lacombe Stable Inc. Trainer: Tom Albertrani. Jockey: Jose Lezcano. Silks: Blue with gray star.

Sire: Deputy Commander. Dam: Glitters. Record: 7-2-1-0. Earnings: $205,548.

Comments: Disappointing over a sloppy track in the Wood after upsetting Bluegrass Cat in the Tampa Bay Derby but figures to show early speed .... This will be the first Derby for Albertrani.... LaCombe’s only other Derby horse, Favorite Trick, finished eighth in 1998 after winning horse-of-the-year honors as a 2-year-old.

*

15. SEASIDE RETREAT (50-1)

Owner: W.S. Farish Jr. Trainer: Mark Casse. Jockey: Patrick Husbands. Silks: Green with gold stripe.

Sire: King Cugat. Dam: Shes Like Rio. Record: 7-3-1-1. Earnings: $266,632.

Comments: Finished 32 1/2 lengths behind Sinister Minister in the Blue Grass.... Unproven outside Canada, having scored all three of his wins last year at Woodbine in Toronto. Best finish in three races in the U.S. was a second to the ill-fated With a City in the Lane’s End, a weak Derby prep, on March 25 at Turfway Park.... This is the first Derby for Casse, who wins regularly at Woodbine.

*

16. CAUSE TO BELIEVE (50-1)

Owner: Peter Redekop. Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer. Jockey: Russell Baze. Silks: Purple with black lettering.

Sire: Maria’s Mon. Dam: Imaginary Cat. Record: 10-6-3-1. Earnings: $390,565.

Comments: Had never finished worse than second before checking in third as the 2-1 second choice in the Illinois Derby on April 8.... Has scored all of his victories in Northern California.... His late-running style should play well in a Derby that is almost certain to have a fast pace.... Baze is on his way to becoming racing’s all time winningest rider but he’s had relatively few major stakes victories.

17. LAWYER RON (4-1)

Owner: Estate of James T. Hines Jr. Trainer: Bob Holthus. Jockey: John McKee. Silks: White with blue circle.

Sire: Langfuhr. Dam: Donation. Record: 14-7-1-3. Earnings: $1,220,008.

Comments: If not for races on turf and Turfway Park’s Polytrack, this colt would be unbeaten. He is perfect in seven starts on dirt, including four consecutive wins to begin 2006.... Named for attorney Ron Bamberger, who is managing the estate of Hines, who drowned in February in an accident.... This is the fifth Derby runner for veteran trainer Holthus, whose best finish was a fourth with Property Reality in 1988.... McKee has ridden in two Derbies.

*

18. BROTHER DEREK (3-1)

Owner: Cecil Peacock. Trainer: Dan Hendricks. Jockey: Alex Solis. Silks: Green with rainbow peacock.

Sire: Benchmark. Dam: Miss Soft Sell. Record: 8-6-0-0. Earnings: $1,162,080.

Comments: Is unbeaten in five races around two turns.... Solis also rode a talented California-bred 20 years ago in the Kentucky Derby. Snow Chief, who, like Brother Derek, was coming off a win in the Santa Anita Derby, finished 11th as the 2-1 favorite at Churchill Downs.... This is the first Derby for both Peacock, who made his fortune in oil in Canada, and Hendricks.

*

19. STORM TREASURE (50-1)

Owner: Mike McCarty. Trainer: Steve Asmussen. Jockey: David Flores. Silks: Blue and gold diamonds.

Sire: Storm Boot. Dam: Boogie Beach Blues. Record: 6-1-4-0. Earnings: $210,745.

Comments: Completed a huge exacta in the Blue Grass, finishing second at 65-1.... His biggest plus is that he has demonstrated he likes Churchill Downs. He broke his maiden in his lone start in Louisville on Nov. 6, winning a maiden race by 7 1/4 lengths.... This will be the first time he has been ridden by Flores, who is 0 for 7 in the Derby.... Purchased for $170,000 at the Keeneland September sale in 2004.

20. FLASHY BULL (50-1)

Owner: West Point Thoroughbreds LLC. Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin. Jockey: Mike Smith. Silks: Gold with black star.

Sire: Holy Bull. Dam: Iridesence. Record: 9-1-4-1. Earnings: $159,650.

Comments: Holy Bull sired Giacomo, last year’s surprise winner, and if Flashy Bull were to score, it would be every bit as big an upset. His only win was against maidens over a good track at Belmont Park on Oct. 26.... His best finishes in graded stakes appearances have been seconds in both the Remsen and Fountain Of Youth.... Purchased for $205,000 as a 2-year-old.
