A passenger ferry that crashed into a pier at San Francisco’s bustling Fisherman’s Wharf probably had a broken water jet control, authorities said Sunday.

Nine passengers went to hospitals with minor injuries.

Inspectors completed their initial examination of the Vallejo-bound Baylink ferry that plowed into the wood pilings of Pier 43 in the heavily trafficked tourist area about 4:20 p.m. Saturday, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. John Fu.

Preliminary tests indicated the crash was caused by a mechanical failure on one of the ferry’s two water jet controls, which suck water in and push it out to maneuver the vessel. The malfunction may have caused the captain to lose control and hit the pier,
