U.S. Defends Denying Access to Prisoners

Taking issue with the International Committee of the Red Cross, the State Department said the United States was not obliged to give the committee access to all prisoners.

ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger said he deplored the refusal to allow access to prisoners in secret facilities.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said, “There is a certain subcategory of individuals who have forfeited their protections under the Geneva Conventions.”
