Demanding isn’t talking

Rosa Brooks is right that discourse with Iran would be more productive than the shrug-off strategy of the Bush administration (Opinion, May 12). But the reality is that the administration wants to dictate to a sovereign nation that has not harmed the U.S. in any way what it can and cannot do.

Bush wants to tell Iran that it can have no nuclear energy program, peaceful or otherwise. It’s the negotiating position of a robber, who says, “Give me your wallet or I’ll kill you.”
