McCain’s strange bedfellow

Re “At Graduation, McCain Tips Cap to the Right,” May 14

As I read your article, all I could think of was what strange bedfellows Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and the Rev. Jerry Falwell are. McCain must be grasping at straws to bring the grossly intolerant Falwell into his political realm. It seems ludicrous to envision McCain tolerating Falwell’s lambasting of alternative lifestyles. There are many cases of respecting different viewpoints, but this scenario between these two personalities reeks of political pandering.

McCain seems light-years away from his prisoner-of-war days. People of Falwell’s ilk hurt religion and society, and McCain was not wrong in his previous comments about religious fanaticism. He is seeking political gain by compromising what he truly believes.
