Ventura County deputy killed in car crash
A Ventura County sheriff’s deputy, who recently returned from serving a year in Iraq, was killed Monday in a traffic accident in Ventura.
Robert Bornet, 46, a 10-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, was driving to lunch when the accident occurred shortly before noon, authorities said.
Bornet was traveling east on Telephone Road, near Montgomery Avenue, when his silver Toyota pickup truck apparently swiped a blue Ford SUV, according to a Ventura police spokesman.
Bornet’s truck flipped over and came to a stop on its passenger side after striking the center median, a palm tree, a utility pole and a wall.
The accident remains under investigation.
Capt. Ron Nelson, a sheriff’s spokesman, said Bornet, a Ventura resident and a bailiff for Ventura County Superior Court Judge Colleen Toy White, was also a master chief in the Navy Reserve and had returned two months ago after serving in Iraq.
Bornet is survived by his wife and four children.
