Marine faces trial in killing
CAMP PENDLETON — Marine Sgt. Lawrence G. Hutchins III was ordered Tuesday to face court-martial on charges of murder, conspiracy, kidnapping and obstruction of justice in the death of an Iraqi man, Hashim Ibrahim Awad, in Hamandiya on April 26. He also will face charges of assaulting other Iraqis.
In the Hamandiya case, Navy corpsman Melson Bacos, Marine Pfc. John J. Jodka III and Marine Lance Cpl. Tyler A. Jackson have pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the death of Awad, who they said was suspected of being an insurgent. Marine Lance Cpl. Jerry Shumate Jr. also has agreed to plead guilty.
Hutchins, who is accused of planning the attack, and three other Marines will stand trial.
