Police chief wants Guard to remain

New Orleans Police Supt. Warren J. Riley, disturbed by the violent deaths of six people over the holiday weekend, said he would ask the governor to keep National Guard troops in the city past the end of the year, when their mission to help patrol hurricane-damaged neighborhoods is scheduled to end.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco said the governor would reassess the need to extend the Guard’s presence at the end of the year.
