Virginia Tech Falls to Boston College

Boston College walk-on Steve Aponavicius never showed a hint of hardship against Virginia Tech, delivering a perfect kicking performance in his football debut.

It was only after the game that the left-footed soccer convert allowed his aw-shucks inexperience to show through.

“All of it was fun. Every minute of it,” he said Thursday night after making two field goals and two extra points to lead host Boston College to a 22-3 victory over No. 22 Virginia Tech. “I just wanted to go out and enjoy it.”

The Boston College defense forced four turnovers to send Virginia Tech to its second consecutive loss. Boston College, 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, is a North Carolina State desperation pass away from being unbeaten.

Virginia Tech (4-2, 2-2) has lost consecutive games since rising to No. 11 in the Associated Press top 25. The Hokies are 12-2 in Thursday night games.

“It’s a big win on Thursday night against a program that’s owned Thursday night,” Boston College Coach Tom O’Brien said.

Matt Ryan completed 16 of 29 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns despite limping through much of the second half on a previously injured ankle. Kevin Challenger caught two touchdown passes and freshman Alex Albright contributed to two turnovers, tipping a pass that was intercepted and recovering a fumble.

Virginia Tech’s Sean Glennon completed 23 of 34 passes. Two of his passes were intercepted.

“It’s frustrating,” Glennon said. “You think you played all right. Then I look at the stat sheet and you see two interceptions and a fumble.”

Shaun Carney led Air Force on three second-half touchdown drives, and the Falcons overcame an 83-yard pass play just before halftime to beat Colorado State, 24-21, in a Mountain West Conference game at Air Force Academy, Colo. The Falcons are 3-2 and 3-0 and the Rams fell to 4-2 and 1-1.

James Davis ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns in nine carries -- all in the first half -- to help No. 12 Clemson rout Temple, 63-9, in a nonconference game at Charlotte, N.C. The Tigers are 6-1 and the Owls, losers of 19 in a row, fell to 0-7.

University of Michigan police have arrested a 23-year-old man they say stalked and sent threatening e-mails to Coach Lloyd Carr.

Tobi Akinmusuru, of Ann Arbor, Mich., was arrested Tuesday, the same day Carr and other coaching staff members received threatening, harassing and obscene e-mail, campus police said.

Notre Dame defensive end Ronald Talley has left the team after starting four games this season. In six games, Talley, a 6-foot-4, 262-pound junior from Detroit, had 11 tackles.... Wake Forest quarterback Ben Mauk underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair his injured right shoulder.
