Remy Belvaux, 38, a Belgian filmmaker whose black comedy “Man Bites Dog” developed a cult following after the 1992 Cannes Film Festival, died Monday in Orry-la-Ville, France, according to European press reports.
His family announced his death in a statement but did not specify the cause.
With collaborators Andre Bonzel and Benoit Poelvoorde, Belvaux wrote, directed, produced and acted in the low-budget, black-and-white “mockumentary” that generated controversy for its depiction of rampant violence as it follows a serial killer making his rounds.
Times film critic Kenneth Turan called the movie a disturbing, audacious look at the nature of violence on film.
Belvaux made no other films but directed award-winning commercials in Europe.
