State Dept. accuses Iran of stonewalling on missing man

The State Department on Tuesday publicly questioned Iran’s assertion that it does not know anything about a missing former FBI agent.

Robert Levinson was last seen in early March on the Iranian island of Kish.

“Given the nature of the Iranian security apparatus, we find it hard to believe that ... they don’t in some way monitor the comings and goings of individuals on Kish Island,” spokesman Sean McCormack said.

His comments were the first open U.S. challenge to the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s assertion last week that it had no knowledge about Levinson.

“I can’t rule out for you that he is, in fact, being held by the Iranian government,” McCormack said.
