UGK rules with ‘Kingz’
TEXAS-based hip-hop duo UGK has locked down the No. 1 slot with its first new release since rapper Pimp C was sprung from prison. “Underground Kingz” sold 160,000 copies in its first week in stores, according to Nielsen SoundScan, giving UGK its first album to reach the top of the national sales chart.
UGK’s career was put on hold while Pimp C served half of an eight-year sentence for aggravated assault. He was released at the end of 2005. During that time, UGK’s other half, Bun B, began a solo career, and its label, Jive Records, released two UGK compilation albums. Guests joining UGK’s return to recording on “Underground Kingz” include Three 6 Mafia, Lil Jon, T.I. and OutKast’s André 3000.
At No. 2 this week is the debut from rapper Plies, whose “Real Testament” sold 96,000 copies. The young, Florida-based artist is riding the success of hot single “Shawty,” and first arrived on the scene last summer when he collaborated with Akon on the song “I Wanna Love You,” which Akon re-rerecorded with Snoop Dogg for his hit album “Konvicted.”
The Disney-friendly, New Jersey-based pop act the Jonas Brothers enters at No. 5 with its sophomore effort. “The Jonas Brothers” sold 69,000 copies.
