Arizona 8, at San Diego 7: Rookie Mark Reynolds had three hits and a career-high five runs batted in to help the Diamondbacks avoid a four-game sweep and recapture first place in the National League West. Arizona, which trailed San Diego by one percentage point coming into the game, held on for the win after taking an 8-0 lead. Reynolds hit a two-run homer an estimated 451 feet into the second deck in left field off Chris Young (9-5) in the second inning. He capped a four-run fifth inning with a three-run double.
at Chicago 5, Milwaukee 4: Matt Murton and Alfonso Soriano hit consecutive home runs off Chris Capuano in the sixth inning and the Cubs beat the Brewers to push their lead in the Central Division back to 2 1/2 games. Chicago took two of three in its final series of the season with second-place Milwaukee. St. Louis is three games behind. Murton, who entered the game in a double switch in the top of the inning, hit his fifth homer to break a 3-3 tie with two out. One pitch later, Soriano connected on his team-leading 19th.
at Philadelphia 11, New York 10: Pat Burrell hit two home runs for the Phillies and has 41 in his career against the Mets.
at Houston 2, St. Louis 1: Matt Albers pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Lance Berkman homered for the second consecutive game for the Astros.
Cincinnati 5, at Pittsburgh 4: Alex Gonzalez scored from first base on Ken Griffey Jr.’s pop-fly single that fell among three Pirates fielders in the ninth inning.
