Coliseum panel is fumbling the ball
Re “Home-field advantage,” editorial, Nov. 30
The University of Southern California has agreed to spend $100 million to make necessary changes to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Denying this will only hurt the city of Los Angeles, as the money that is generated to local business will be moved to Pasadena. The Coliseum Commission wants to save the dilapidated structure in hopes that a National Football League team will decide to take it over.
The commission, made up of city, county and state officials, is responsible for the economic well-being of its constituents. Commission members need only attend one USC game to see that thousands upon thousands more people come to USC games and spend money at local businesses than at any time when the Rams or Raiders were in town. USC also won’t relocate. The Trojans have been at the Coliseum for 80 years.

I cannot wait until 2015 when the Coliseum’s last two tenants, the West Adams Pop Warner Football Club and the L.A. Swap Meet, decide to move because the restrooms have backed up onto the field and the drinking fountains no longer function. The Coliseum Commission holds a meeting to discuss the issue and decides to hire a consultant to determine whether forming a team to discuss hiring a plumber is really necessary.
