City official must repay her salary

A former City Council member who pleaded no contest to conflict of interest charges over her appointment as city manager will have to repay her entire salary -- more than $85,000 -- to the city, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Drew Edwards ruled Friday.

The restitution ruling marked the resolution of a case that began with the 2001 arrest of Maria Chacon, then considered the most powerful public official in Bell Gardens, and went all the way to the state Supreme Court. It was the first major case brought by a division created by Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley to fight public corruption.
