Mata-Real doubtful for Saturday’s game
Senior center Lorenzo Mata-Real strained his left groin at Wednesday’s practice, UCLA’s first after a three-day Christmas break. He is doubtful for Saturday’s game against UC Davis at Pauley Pavilion, the Bruins’ last game before opening their Pacific 10 Conference season Jan. 3 at Stanford.
Junior point guard Darren Collison sprained his left ankle in practice Thursday and is questionable for today’s practice.
Mata-Real played only eight minutes -- all in the first half -- in Saturday’s 69-54 win at Michigan because he and Michael Roll were suffering from a flu-like illness. Mata-Real is averaging 4.5 points and is second on the team with an average of 5.6 rebounds.
As a starter last season, Mata-Real averaged 6.6 points and 5.4 rebounds, but he now backs up freshman Kevin Love.
