Tuareg rebels released 10 Malian army soldiers after holding them hostage for months deep in the Sahara.

The Algerian news agency APS said the soldiers had been turned over to an Algerian mediator and would be handed over to a Malian government representative.

Rebels previously had released 16 soldiers. They are still holding nine others.

Tuareg fighters led by insurgent chief Ibrahima Bahanga took dozens of government soldiers hostage in a campaign that began in August.
