Henry Moreno, 77; longshot jockey in 1953 Kentucky Derby
Henry Moreno, 77, a jockey who scored his biggest victory aboard a 24-1 longshot in the 1953 Kentucky Derby, died Thursday in Florence, Ore., after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Moreno guided Dark Star, who was owned by Harry Guggenheim’s Cay Hoy Stable and trained by Eddie Hayward, to a wire-to-wire victory in the derby, holding on to defeat heavily favored Native Dancer by a head. The loss was the only one in 22 races for Native Dancer.
Moreno had six stakes victories during his horse racing career at Santa Anita, including a win aboard Sir William in the 1957 Santa Anita Derby.
