Mixing and matching
I am a white woman who has been married to a black man for the past 22 years, and we dated for nine years prior to getting married [“The Hot Button of a Casual Embrace,” Feb. 11]. We have two sons together, ages 19 and 17. In all of our years together, we have never felt that the race differences between us caused anything different in our lives that same-race couples might encounter.
As for the comments from Mara Brock Akil referring to the “elephant in the room,” or to Jannette Dates’ comment of “not knowing any interracial couples who don’t have to work at it,” I invite them to speak to couples who have been in loving, interracial relationships for years. The recent depictions of interracial couples on television have been refreshing, and from my personal perspective, they have been pretty darn close to my reality! I say kudos to the entertainment industry to finally entering the 21st century!
