‘Recovered Voices’ symposium planned

Los Angeles Opera and the University of Judaism will hold a symposium on the opera company’s multiyear “Recovered Voices” project at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Gindi Auditorium, 15600 Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles.

L.A. Opera music director James Conlon will lead the discussion about composers whose works were banished by the Third Reich and who died in the Holocaust, emigrated from Germany or in rare cases survived the war.

Chamber works by Ervin Schuloff, Ernest Toch, Gideon Klein and Erich Wolfgang Korngold will be performed. Guest speakers include Nick Strimple, Amy Wlodarski and Steven Lowenstein. Neal Brostoff will be the moderator.

Conlon will conduct programs of operatic excerpts as well as a complete performance of Alexander Zemlinsky’s “A Florentine Tragedy,” March 7 and 10 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.
