Avengers get ready for Rush

The Avengers could not have asked for a better playoff debut from quarterback Sonny Cumbie than the way he played in last week’s 64-42 victory over Utah.

Cumbie completed his first eight passes and finished 26 for 37 for 306 yards and seven touchdowns in leading the Avengers to their first postseason win and a second-round matchup with the Chicago Rush, the defending ArenaBowl champion.

“Going into the game, I was really focused,” said Cumbie, who completed 62% of his passes for 4,370 yards and 83 touchdowns during the regular season. “I really wanted to get off to a good start to redeem myself from the previous week.”

In the Avengers’ final regular-season game, a 47-37 loss to Utah, Cumbie played one of his worst games of the year and had four passes intercepted.

Tonight’s game is the third meeting of the season between the Avengers and Chicago.

When Chicago won, 66-31, on April 1, the Rush took advantage of an Avengers team that was playing its third game in a row on the road.

The Avengers had better success in the rematch when Remy Hamilton’s field goal at the buzzer gave them a 50-47 victory at Staples Center on June 2.

“They are a savvy veteran team that really plays well at home,” Cumbie said about the Rush, which is 7-1 at Allstate Arena this season.
