* at Baltimore 2, Chicago 0: Erik Bedard pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, and Nick Markakis and Corey Patterson homered off Mark Buehrle. Bedard (8-4) struck out seven to increase his league-leading total to 156. He allowed only three runners past first base.
* Toronto 6, at Boston 5: After giving up five runs in the first three innings, Shaun Marcum settled down to earn his first win since June 16 and improve to 4-1 since joining the rotation on May 13. Marcum, who spent the first six weeks of the season in the bullpen, yielded seven hits in six innings.
* at Tampa Bay 6, New York 4: Scott Kazmir yielded four hits in six innings to outpitch Roger Clemens. Kazmir, an All-Star a year ago who then sat out much of the second half because of an injury, yielded one unearned run.
* at Cleveland 5, Kansas City 4: Ryan Garko singled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning. The Indians improved baseball’s best home record to 32-12.
* at Minnesota 5, Oakland 3: Johan Santana, the reigning Cy Young winner, won his fifth consecutive start. He yielded four hits in seven scoreless innings and retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced to lower his earned-run average to 2.60.
* Detroit 6, at Seattle 3: Gary Sheffield hit the 12th grand slam of his career, providing all the offense Jeremy Bonderman needed. Bonderman (10-1), who gave up six hits in seven innings, became the 12th AL pitcher to reach double figures in victories.
* at Angels 2, Texas 1: Casey Kotchman singled to right with one out in the ninth to drive in Gary Matthews Jr.
