Robert D. Haugh, 92; former head of Citrus and Glendale colleges
Robert D. Haugh, 92, a Southland educator who was president and superintendent of Citrus College in Azusa from 1967 to 1981, died July 21 at Methodist Hospital in Arcadia after developing a blood disorder, his daughter Judy said.
Haugh was president of what is now Glendale College for eight years before arriving at Citrus. He presided over the two campuses at a time of booming enrollment after state colleges and universities raised admission standards and high school seniors were encouraged to start their higher education at two-year institutions.
At Citrus he instituted flexible class schedules that expanded traditional daytime offerings into evening and Saturday classes and boosted the athletic and arts programs. The on-campus performing arts center is named for him.
Born in Venice on July 26, 1914, Haugh lived most of his life in Monrovia.
He earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at USC and served in the Navy during World War II.
In 1946 he was hired at what is now Pasadena City College to counsel veterans and eventually became dean of students, serving until 1959. A scholarship in his name was established there in 2005.
