Less-than-fierce guards at the gates

Regarding “Do Fence Me In,” Feb. 25: On a recent Saturday night my wife and I went to a party in Northridge. We were told to stop at the gate and give our names to the guard, who would then admit us. The guard turned out to be hard of hearing and at least 60 years old, possibly pushing 70. He let us in, and we had an enjoyable evening.

But how much protection do the residents of this community think they have when all there is between them and a home-invasion robbery is a senior citizen working for minimum wage?
