Wilson shoots 66 to move into lead at Honda Classic

Mark Wilson and Boo Weekley both shot four-under-par 66s Saturday in the third round of the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla..

That was good enough to put Wilson atop the leaderboard at six-under 204 and Weekley alone in second, one shot behind entering the final round -- where both will seek their first PGA Tour victory.

Wilson is winless on 110 events on tour, with a world ranking of 265.

Weekley hasn’t won any of his other 30 starts, with a world ranking of 196.

Daniel Chopra (68) was third at four under, and Steve Stricker (70) and Charlie Wi (72) were tied for fourth at three under. Robert Allenby (73), who entered the day tied for the lead with Wi, was sixth at two under.

Federer wins at Dubai and extends streak to 41

Top-ranked Roger Federer won the Dubai Open for the fourth time in five years, defeating Mikhail Youzhny, 6-4, 6-3.

It was his 41st consecutive victory, tying Bjorn Borg for the fourth-longest streak in the Open era and leaving him five short of Guillermo Vilas’ 1977 record. Ivan Lendl (44 in 1981-82) and John McEnroe (42 in 1984) also are in front of Federer.

Top-seeded Justine Henin won the Qatar Open at Doha with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Henin ended a streak of Russian domination in Qatar dating to 2003 when Anastasia Myskina won. Myskina repeated in 2004, and Maria Sharapova and Nadia Petrova won in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Mancuso wins Cup downhill in Italy

Julia Mancuso of Olympic Valley, Calif., won a World Cup downhill at Tarvisio, Italy, and moved to within nine points of leader Marlies Schild in the overall standings. Renate Goetschl finished second to clinch the discipline title.

Mancuso skied the 1.9-mile course in 1 minute 52.67 seconds for her fourth win of the season. Goetschl was 0.17 of a second behind, and Emily Brydon was third, 0.21 behind.

Schild, who finished seventh, leads the overall standings with 1,148 points. Mancuso moved up to second with 1,139. Nicole Hosp, who finished 17th, dropped to third with 1,103.

Defending overall World Cup champion Benjamin Raich won a giant slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, to take the lead in the discipline standings and move to within three points of Aksel Lund Svindal for the overall World Cup lead.

Raich finished in 2 minutes 19.03. Francois Bourque was second, 0.55 of a second behind. Massimiliano Blardone was third, 0.57 behind. Svindal and Ted Ligety of Park City, Utah, tied for fourth, 0.62 behind.

Raich leads the giant slalom standings with 319 points -- three more than Svindal and 19 more than Blardone. Svindal has 868 points in the overall standings, Raich 865.

Bill Demong of Vermontville, N.Y., won the silver medal in the Nordic combined 15-kilometer event at the Nordic skiing world championships at Sapporo, Japan, becoming only the second American to medal in the event at the championships -- the first since Johnny Spillane in 2003.

Defending champion Ronny Ackermann won in 38 minutes 35.6 seconds, and Demong edged Anssi Koivuranta in a photo finish -- 8.5 seconds behind.

For the first time in the event’s 30-year history, U.S. women swept the medals at the World Junior Figure Skating championships.

Caroline Zhang of Irvine and Mirai Nagasu of Arcadia, both 13, won gold and silver, respectively, at Oberstdorf, Germany. Ashley Wagner, 15, of Virginia, won bronze.

Pruett wins the pole for Mexico City Busch race

Scott Pruett won the pole for today’s Telcel-Motorola 200 in Mexico City, the third NASCAR Busch Series race to be held south of the border.

Pruett had a fast lap of 103.647 mph in a Dodge on the 2.518-mile Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez course.

Carlos Contreras was second at 103.407 mph in a Dodge, and Juan Pablo Montoya was third at 103.391 mph, also in a Dodge.

Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael made a victorious return to the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series, edging Kawasaki’s James Stewart in front of 58,131 at the Edwards Jones Dome in St. Louis.

Free-agent Garcia signs with Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent quarterback Jeff Garcia to a two-year contract and potentially nabbed even more competition for incumbent starter Chris Simms by obtaining the rights to Jake Plummer from Denver.

U.S. will play Brazil in Under-20 World Cup

The U.S. will play four-time winner Brazil in this summer’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup men’s tournament in Canada.

The U.S. was grouped with Brazil, Poland and South Korea in the draw for the 24-country event. As host, Canada automatically qualified. Its opener will be against Chile.

The June 30-July 22 tournament is FIFA’s second-largest after the World Cup.
