Washington State rolls on with Brink

Alex Brink has the yardage. He’d just like to have more touchdowns to go with it.

“It’s a special feeling to get a record and a win,” Brink said after throwing for 449 yards and breaking the school record for career touchdown passes, leading Washington State to a 33-17 victory over Stanford on Saturday at Pullman, Wash.

With two games remaining, the Cougars could still receive a postseason bowl bid, and Brink said the team would like to convert big offensive yards into touchdowns against upcoming Oregon State and Washington.

“We realize there’s a lot left to play here. Now we have to focus on getting touchdowns,” Brink said after four drives resulted in field goals, with only a single passing touchdown.

In a game marred by fumbles and roughing-the-quarterback penalties, Washington State (4-6, 2-5 Pac-10) had 561 yards of total offense and the Cougars withstood a third-quarter rally by the Cardinal (3-7, 2-6).

Senior wide receiver Michael Bumpus caught an 18-yard pass from Brink in the first quarter for the 178th reception of his career, moving past the mark of 177 set by Hugh Campbell in 1960-62.

Oregon State 29, Washington 23 -- Yvenson Bernard ran for 149 yards and Alexis Serna kicked five field goals to make the Beavers (6-4, 4-3) bowl eligible with a wild win over the Huskies (3-7, 1-6) that turned ugly when four players were ejected at Corvallis, Ore.

Washington sophomore quarterback Jake Locker was taken off the field in an ambulance in the second quarter, after a hit near the Huskies sideline left him motionless. He was put on a stretcher, lifted into an ambulance and taken to a hospital.

Locker later was released and returned to Reser Stadium after a neck injury was ruled out.
